Picture Walk

Strategy Explanation: Picture walk is a strategy that consists of a sequence of tableaus where participants hold a pose to represent a scene. The participants use facial expression and body language to convey meaning, without the use of motion or vocals. This strategy uses the techniques of tableau to convey scenes in a book.

Cross-curricular connections and Age Adaptations: Picture walk can be integrated into any grade level simply by varying the level of difficulty of the book and tableau requirements. This strategy also easily connects to the language arts curriculum as students are required to interpret text and represent it. A simple, straight forward and descriptive text with clear images could be used with older students, whereas a more complex text could be used with older students. Another option to make it more difficult would be to not show the pictures of the book to the students so they have to create the scene with their imagination or to use a book without pictures.
